2004 Mazda Tribute
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2004 Mazda Tribute Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call one morning from a guy in North Park, San Diego, near the dialysis center off University Avenue. He was a retired bus driver, went to treatment three times a week, and his only key had stopped starting the car reliably.

Sometimes it would crank right up, sometimes the engine would turn over and then cut out almost immediately, and he could never predict which it was going to be. His aide was unavailable that day and the nearest Mazda dealer was across town in a direction that did not work with his schedule.

He was not asking for much. He just needed to know his car would start when treatment was done.

I met him in the parking lot before his appointment. The key blade was worn down enough that I decoded the ignition cuts and cut a fresh replacement on site. The transponder chip in the original was still reading, but it was marginal, the kind of thing that works most of the time until one day it does not. I programmed the new key through the OBD port, verified the immobilizer accepted it, and did a few start cycles to confirm it was consistent.

He went into his appointment. When he came out, he had a key that started his car every time. He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him, plus the logistics of getting there on a treatment day. We left it at that. Some jobs are just about making something reliable for someone who cannot afford it not to be.
