Got a call from a guy in Downtown Ramona, in the parking lot near the old storefronts off Main. Night shift, just got off work, and his 2024 Ariya was showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash. Not every time, just often enough to rattle him. He'd already had a replacement fob made by someone else a couple weeks earlier.
He said it worked fine for about eight days. Started every morning no problem. Then one evening it started flashing the warning intermittently, and by the end of the week push-button start was refusing to recognize the fob at all unless he held it right up against the button. He was convinced the car had a wiring issue.
It didn't.
I pulled out my diagnostic gear and read what was registered in the system. The previously programmed fob had been written with the wrong transponder configuration for this vehicle. That's the thing about the Ariya's security system: it doesn't always reject a mismatched key immediately. It can accept it during initial enrollment and then fail once the vehicle completes its full multi-cycle verification. The car essentially does a deeper security check over subsequent start events and eventually stops trusting a key it shouldn't have accepted.
I erased the old registration, programmed a correct replacement fob matched to the factory FCC ID on his original key, and verified all four buttons plus proximity detection before I called it done. The CR2032 in his old fob was also sitting low on voltage, which was making the intermittent detection even worse. Fresh cell, properly seated.
He stood there in the lot watching me run the door handles and the start cycle a few times. When everything came back clean, he just nodded and said he thought he was going to be at the dealer for two days.
He wasn't. Whole thing done on site, fraction of what the dealer would have wanted.
