2003 Pontiac Aztek
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to making a spare?

More. Always more. When you still have a working key, adding a spare is a quick job. I program the new key alongside the existing one and you are done. All-keys-lost means the immobilizer has no enrolled key to reference. The system needs a full reset through the diagnostic port before any new key can be registered. That takes more time and more involved equipment. The gap between spare and all-keys-lost pricing is real.

Q: Do aftermarket transponder keys actually work on a 2003 Aztek?

Some do, some do not. The chip inside the key head has to match what the immobilizer is looking for. Aftermarket blanks vary in quality, and a cheap one can program initially but cause intermittent start issues down the road, or fail to program at all. I use blanks that are verified to spec for this vehicle. The key gets tested before I leave. You are not finding out a week later that something was off.

Q: My 2003 Aztek starts and then immediately stalls. Is that the transponder key failing?

That exact symptom, starts and stalls within a second or two, is one of the most telling signs of an immobilizer issue. The engine fires because the mechanical key turned the ignition, then the immobilizer checks the chip, does not recognize it, and kills the engine.

Q: Can I program a replacement transponder key for a 2003 Aztek myself at home?

On some older GM vehicles from this era, there is an onboard relearn sequence that owners can do without tools. Whether that applies to your specific Aztek depends on the immobilizer setup in your car and whether you still have at least one working programmed key. With two working keys and the right blank, some of these will walk you through an add-a-key procedure using the ignition. All-keys-lost is a different story. No working key means no onboard sequence.

2003 Pontiac Aztek Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from someone parked off Cardiff-by-the-Sea, right near the coast. 2003 Pontiac Aztek, sitting in a lot, and the only key they had was worn down enough that it had started getting finicky. Then one morning it just stopped working altogether.

They had already been to a hardware store. Key was cut fine. Blade went in and turned. Car would crank, run for a second, then stall. Classic immobilizer behavior. The store blank had no transponder chip in it.

I pulled up, confirmed the issue, and got to work. Cut a new key to match the ignition using the right chipped blank. Then connected through the diagnostic port to register the new key to the immobilizer. The procedure wipes the old key data and enrolls the new one fresh. On an all-keys-lost job like this, there is a timed sequence involved, so you do not rush it.

Turned the key. Started right up and stayed running. No warning lights sitting on the dash, no stalling.

The owner had already called the dealer before reaching me. They were quoted a wait of several days and a price that made them pause. They paid a fraction of that, parked at the beach, and had a working key in about an hour.

Pontiac Aztek Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 2003 Pontiac Aztek?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. The Aztek uses a transponder key, which means the blank has to have the right chip inside, and that chip has to be programmed to your specific vehicle. A hardware store can cut the blade, but they almost never stock the correct chipped blank, and they definitely cannot program it. You end up with a key that turns but does not start the car.
