2002 Pontiac Montana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is the FCC ID for the 2002 Pontiac Montana key?

This vehicle uses a transponder key with no remote, so there's no FCC ID. FCC IDs apply to radio-frequency devices like key fobs. The 2002 Montana key doesn't transmit anything. What matters for replacement is the dealer part number for the correct key blank and confirming the transponder chip type so it programs to this vehicle's immobilizer. That's what we verify before we cut anything.

Q: How much does a 2002 Pontiac Montana key replacement cost?

Call us for the exact number. What I can tell you is it's way less than the dealer route, which on a job like this also wants you to tow the van to them and wait. Our price covers the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and the mobile service to your driveway in East Valley or wherever you're parked in Escondido. The quote you get on the phone is what you pay.

Q: The engine starts but immediately stalls on my 2002 Montana. Could this be the key?

Yes, that start-then-stall is the classic sign of an immobilizer that didn't recognize the transponder. The engine fires on the starter, but the security system cuts fuel within about two seconds. A few things cause it. The transponder chip in the key head can fail, especially on a key that's twenty-plus years old. The chip can also be damaged by heat, physical impact, or a poorly done copy where the chip wasn't transferred correctly.

Q: Can I buy a replacement transponder key online and have it cut at a hardware store?

You can buy a blank and get it cut, but the cut key alone won't start the car. The transponder still needs to be programmed to the vehicle's immobilizer, and a hardware store can't do that. Without programming, you get the start-and-stall or no-start condition every time. Save the step of sourcing your own blank. We bring the right blank, cut it, and program it in one visit.

2002 Pontiac Montana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in East Valley, Escondido. His 2002 Pontiac Montana had been sitting in the driveway for three days. He had one key, it broke off in the ignition, and the spare had been lost for years. No key, no way in, no way to start it.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him the van would need to be towed in, and they couldn't get to it for several days. He wasn't happy about that math.

I drove out to him. The Montana was sitting in the sun, doors locked, broken blade still in the cylinder. I extracted the broken piece without touching the tumbler pins, then decoded the lock right there to pull the key code. Cut a fresh key on the portable machine and had a working blade in hand before I even touched the OBD port.

Then came the programming. Connected my tool, ran the all-keys-lost procedure, and enrolled the new transponder. Cranked it. Two-second stall on the first attempt, which told me the chip registration needed one more cycle. Went through it again, clean enrollment, and the engine stayed running. Cut a second key and enrolled that one too so he wouldn't be in this spot again.

He mentioned the dealer quote on his way back inside to grab his wallet. I just nodded. It was a fraction of what they wanted, done in his driveway, same morning he called.

Pontiac Montana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2002 Pontiac Montana key fob have a battery I need to replace?▼

The 2002 Montana transponder key is not a fob. There are no buttons, no remote functions, and no battery to replace. It's a key with a transponder chip molded into the plastic head. The chip is passive, meaning it draws power from the ignition ring when you insert the key, so there's nothing to maintain on that side.
