2005 Pontiac Montana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know if my 2005 Pontiac Montana key has the right part number?

The dealer part number on these is stamped or printed on the original key head, and there's a known OEM reference for this year. When you call us, just give us the year, make, model, and VIN and we'll show up with the correct blank. Bringing the old key, even a broken one, helps confirm you're getting an exact match. The chip type and blade profile both have to be right, and we verify both before we leave.

Q: Do I need to bring my 2005 Pontiac Montana somewhere to get a replacement key made?

No. We come to you. Driveway in Mt. Helix, parking lot, wherever the vehicle sits. Our mobile setup handles the key cutting and the transponder programming on site. No tow, no waiting around at a dealership, no rental car. You call, we show up, and you're driving again before we leave.

Q: My 2005 Montana cranks but immediately stalls. Could this be the transponder key failing?

That's actually the classic sign of an immobilizer issue on this generation. The engine fires, runs for a second or two, then cuts out. It's the vehicle's security system shutting the fuel down because it didn't get a valid signal from the transponder chip in your key. A few things can cause this. The chip inside the key head can fail or crack, especially on a worn key that's taken some drops.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online for my 2005 Montana. Can I just get it cut and skip the programming?

Cutting without programming gets you a key that fits the ignition but won't start the car. The engine will crank and die every time. The transponder chip inside the key head has to be enrolled to the vehicle using the right equipment. Also, not every blank sold online carries the correct chip for this application, so even if you get it programmed, there's a chance the chip type is wrong and it still won't work.

2005 Pontiac Montana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to Mt. Helix on a Tuesday morning. The owner of a 2005 Pontiac Montana had snapped her only key, blade still stuck in the ignition cylinder, head with the transponder chip in her hand.

She'd already called the dealer. They told her to have it towed in, no guarantees on turnaround, and quoted her a price that didn't include the tow or the rental she'd need while they held it. She's got kids, she's got a schedule, and none of that worked.

I drove out to her house in La Mesa. The broken blade was the first thing to deal with. Got it extracted from the cylinder without pulling the whole column, which saved a lot of time. Then I cut a replacement key blade to match the vehicle, seated the new transponder, and ran the programming through the OBD port right there in her driveway.

Two key cycles. Then a third just to be sure. Engine started clean every time.

She mentioned she'd been meaning to get a spare made for two years. I made her two keys while I was already set up, because doing it on site when the tools are already out is the obvious move.

The whole thing took about 45 minutes, start to finish. The dealer option would have eaten most of her week. She paid a fraction of what they quoted and didn't move the van an inch.

Does the 2005 Pontiac Montana key have a remote or fob?▼

No. The 2005 Montana uses a transponder key only. It turns in the ignition like a standard key, but there's a chip in the plastic head that has to communicate with the immobilizer. No buttons, no fob, no battery. If someone is selling you a replacement key with a remote built in for this year and model, that's the wrong part.
