A guy flagged me down in a parking lot off Campo Road in East Lemon Grove. He had already been through it. A different locksmith had come out, charged him for a key for his 2004 Subaru Baja, collected the money, and left. The car would crank, fire up for about two seconds, then die. Every time.
He thought his car was broken. The other locksmith had told him the immobilizer module might be failing and that he needed a dealer. That is a convenient exit when you did not finish the job.
I recognized the symptom immediately. The engine cranks and starts, then cuts out a couple seconds later. The car accepts the crank signal but does not see an authorized key in memory, so it shuts fuel down. The key data had been written temporarily but never committed. It is a timing issue in the registration sequence, not a hardware failure.
I connected through the OBD port, cleared the incomplete key data, and ran a clean registration with the full timed handshake. When I tested the start, the engine caught and held. No two-second cutoff. I walked him through a couple of start cycles so he could see it was consistent, then tested both buttons on the fob.
He had already paid the first guy. My price was way less than what the dealer quoted him, and this time it actually worked.
