I was parked on Pier View Way in Downtown Oceanside, finishing up a different job, when a call came in about a 2006 Subaru Baja. The owner had a spare key that had been sitting in a drawer for years. He finally dug it out after his main key stopped working reliably, and now the spare was doing the same thing: turning in the ignition, engine cranking, then stalling almost immediately after it caught.
He had already been to an auto parts store that morning. They pulled no codes. They told him it was probably the fuel pump. He was three days away from paying a shop to drop the tank.
I drove over and looked at his Baja in a parking lot off Coast Highway. He turned the key for me and I watched it happen. Engine fired, ran for about one second, then stalled clean. No stumble, no rough idle. Just off. That pattern tells me the immobilizer rejected the key signal. The engine control module sees fuel and spark but the security system cuts fuel authorization the moment it decides the key is not the right one.
His original key was worn down from years of use. The chip itself was still intact, but the blade had worn enough that the ignition cylinder was reading it inconsistently. On older transponder systems like this one, a marginal key can pass the cut recognition but fail just enough of the transponder read to trigger a shutdown.
I cut a fresh key blade to match his vehicle and programmed the transponder chip to his car on site. Two clean starts in the parking lot. Third start from the far end of the row with me watching from a distance. He drove it down to the pier and back as a test loop while I packed up.
He mentioned the dealer had given him a two-day turnaround estimate just to look at it. He came out ahead in both time and money. And his Baja did not need a fuel pump.
