2005 Subaru Baja
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2005 Subaru Baja Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in Sweetwater, National City. He had a 2005 Subaru Baja sitting in the lot behind a record shop and he wanted one thing: a spare key made before something went wrong. Not because anything was broken. Just smart planning from someone who had been stranded before in a different car and learned his lesson.

He met me outside and held up his original. Single key, no remote, just the key. He asked me straight whether an aftermarket blank was going to be as good as what he'd get from the dealer.

I told him the truth. The blade gets cut to match his lock and ignition. The transponder chip inside gets programmed to his vehicle's immobilizer. When it's done, the car starts. That's the job. The chip doesn't know or care who printed the plastic around it.

I cut the blade right there in the van, matched it to the original, then programmed the chip to the Baja's immobilizer. Two keys now. He tested it himself, turned it over twice, and handed it back to me like he was checking my work. Which is fine. That's what I'm there for.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out, but that he'd saved a good chunk. He nodded and went back inside.

The job took about 25 minutes on site. One visit, no tow, no appointment, no waiting a week for a parts order.
