2023 Subaru Solterra Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy in South Oceanside called me on a Tuesday morning. He had a 2023 Solterra and exactly one working key. He wanted a spare before something went sideways, which is the smartest call anyone makes before they actually need it.
He was working from home and met me in his driveway. The car was sitting right there, charged and ready, which is how EV jobs usually go. No gas errand to run while you wait.
I pulled up the vehicle, connected through the OBD port, and let the programmer talk to the immobilizer. The Solterra's security system requires proper diagnostic equipment to register an additional fob. There is no ignition-turn sequence, no button trick. You need the right tool talking to the right module, and that takes a few minutes of handshake time built into the process.
Once the new fob was registered, I walked every function: door handles, start button, the whole five-button layout. Everything behaved. He had a working spare in about 30 minutes, standing in his own driveway, while his first key stayed on his keyring the whole time.
He mentioned he had called the dealer first. The quote he got back involved a parts order, a scheduling wait, and a labor rate that made him pause. He said the total was enough that he went looking for another option. I don't know exactly what number he heard, but he used the word "absurd," and I've heard that word on enough Subaru calls to believe it.
