Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2017 Volvo V60 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Granite Hills, El Cajon, who had been nursing a slow key problem for about two weeks. The fob would work, then it wouldn't, then it would again. He figured it was just the battery. He'd already swapped it once himself.

By the time he called me, the car was sitting in his driveway and the fob wasn't waking the vehicle at any distance. Walk up to the door handle, nothing. Try the slot inside, nothing. He could lock and unlock with the emergency blade, but the car wouldn't start.

I got there and the first thing I did was open the fob and look at the battery seating. The CR2450 he'd put in was correct, but the contact on the negative side had a slight outward bow, not enough to see at a glance but enough to lose contact when the fob flexed. I reshaped the contact, reseated the battery, and the fob lit up the handles again. Good sign, but not the end of the story.

The slot reader in the console was reading the fob intermittently. I cleaned the contacts, tested again, and it held steady. Then I ran a full check through my diagnostic equipment, confirmed the fob was properly enrolled in the vehicle's immobilizer, and walked every function. Locks, the slot start, the emergency blade in the cylinder, all of it.

He'd been a few days away from a dealer visit and a quote that would have sent him sideways. Turned out to be a contact issue and a dirty reader slot. Done in the driveway, on site in Granite Hills, for a fraction of what a dealer would have started the conversation at.
