2018 Volvo V60 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near Torrey Pines, a woman called me about her 2018 Volvo V60. She'd bought it used a couple of years back, one fob, always meant to get a second.
The fob housing had been cracking along the seam for a while, and she'd been ignoring it. Then the seam finally gave and she tried to use the emergency blade for the first time. It snapped in the door lock cylinder on the first attempt.
She called me with the fob shell in two pieces, the blade fragment still in the door, and no way into the car.
I extracted the blade fragment from the cylinder without damaging the lock, then decoded it to cut a fresh blade. The circuit board and transponder inside the cracked housing were intact, which is usually the case even when the plastic is destroyed. I transferred what I needed from the original fob to get the replacement paired, and cut her a second key while I was there because that's the whole lesson she'd just lived through.
She went from zero working keys to two in about 45 minutes. If she'd gone to the dealer, she would have been waiting for an appointment, possibly on a flatbed, and paying a lot more. The chip surviving inside a wrecked housing was the thing that kept this job fast. If you've got a cracked V60 fob sitting in a drawer, don't toss it. The important part is probably still good.
