Out in Carmel Mountain Ranch, I got a call from a woman who had owned her 2010 Volvo V70 for three years on a single fob. She always meant to get a spare cut. Never did.

The fob housing had developed a crack along the seam over time, one of those slow splits you ignore until you can't. Then I registered the second key to the vehicle using my diagnostic equipment so she had a fully functional spare for the first time since she bought the car.

Forty-five minutes from arrival to two working keys. She held both of them and I could tell the weight of that single-key situation had been sitting on her longer than she let on. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that made her put off the whole thing. I was well under that, and I came to her.

If your fob housing is cracked or damaged, don't wait until the blade snaps. The chip inside is usually fine, and that changes everything about the job.
