Out in Bonsall, just east of Fallbrook, a guy had picked up a used 2021 XC40 through an estate sale. Clean car, well kept, one key. The family handed it over and told him the spare was never made. He figured he'd deal with it later.

The fob is a four-button smart key with a fold-out emergency blade, and the XC40 needs proper diagnostic equipment to register a new one to the immobilizer. I connected to the OBD port, pulled up the security system, added the new fob to the existing key memory so neither key lost its registration, and tested every function on both fobs: lock, unlock, the blade, proximity at the door handle.
The whole thing took about forty minutes in his driveway.
He asked why the dealer wanted so much more. I told him part of it is labor rate, part is parts markup, and part is that they book it as a shop job that ties up a bay. My overhead is a van and a parking spot.
He pocketed the new key and said he wished he'd done it six months ago when he first got the car.
