I was parked on the street in Crest on a Tuesday afternoon, finishing notes from a previous job, when the call came in. A woman said her XC40 had been showing a key-not-detected warning for about a week, and that morning it stopped recognizing the fob entirely. CR2032 was reading low enough to cause intermittent communication issues, which can look like a dying fob or a module problem when it is actually just a weak cell. I swapped the battery and retested. The car still would not consistently recognize it, which told me the fob itself had an issue beyond the battery.
I pulled the replacement fob I carry for this generation, connected to the OBD port, and walked through the registration sequence in the vehicle's central electronics module. The process has a timed element built into it on these Volvos, so you do not rush it. Both keys came out registered and confirmed. I tested every button, tested the emergency blade in the door, and walked her through the fob-to-start-button placement trick just so she had it in her back pocket.
She made her meeting. The dealer option would have meant a tow, a four-day wait, and a bill that was a significant chunk more than what she paid me. I was packed up and gone before her coworkers even noticed I had been there.
