Near Kit Carson Park Area in Escondido, I pulled up to a home where a 2022 XC40 was sitting in the driveway looking perfectly fine from the outside.
The owner had the fob in her hand and the problem was obvious the moment she held it out. The rubber button pads had gone soft and mushy, the kind where you press and hold and wait and hope. The shell had a hairline crack running along one seam from what she guessed was a drop at some point. The emergency blade was stiff from never once being extended. I had replacement shells in the van. I opened the fob on her hood so she could watch the whole thing and see exactly what was happening. The circuit board came out clean, no corrosion, no damage, no reason to throw it away. I seated it into the fresh shell, replaced the button pads, freed up the blade and verified the cut was correct. Closed it up and handed it back.
She pressed a button and the XC40 blinked at her like nothing had ever been wrong. She pressed it again just to confirm.
The dealer wanted a full new fob because that is the only option they offer. We had another option, and it saved her a good chunk.
