Q: What is a smart key and how does it work?

A smart key combines a physical blade with electronic components that communicate with your car's security system. When all keys are lost, the car's immobilizer does not have any authorized keys in its memory after we clear the old data. We program the new key's transponder chip so the immobilizer recognizes it and allows the engine to start. All of this happens through the OBD port at your vehicle's location.

Q: What if my key broke in the ignition?

If a key broke off inside the ignition, we can extract the broken piece and inspect the cylinder for damage. Broken keys can bend the internal wafers of the ignition, which can cause the cylinder to stick or not turn. We diagnose that on site and let you know if the ignition needs repair in addition to a new key. If it does, we can handle that too.

Q: Is all-keys-lost more expensive than a regular key replacement?

It can be slightly more because the programming procedure is more involved. We have to clear the old key data from the immobilizer and register the new key from scratch, which takes additional steps and time. But it is still significantly less than the dealer, where you would also be paying for a tow and waiting days for the work to be done.

Q: Can you make a spare key at the same time?

Yes, and we recommend it. Since we already have the equipment connected and the car in programming mode, adding a second key at the same time is faster and cheaper than coming back for a separate visit. Having a spare means you will not be in an all-keys-lost situation again. Most customers who go through a lost key situation want a backup right away.

The OEM versus aftermarket question on 2020 Buick Encore keys is real, and locksmiths on Reddit are blunt about it. Cheap aftermarket fobs on Buick proximity systems are known for intermittent "no remote detected" messages, mushy buttons, and forcing you to use the backup pocket every time.
