A customer in Oxnard had just bought a used 1999 Chevrolet S-10 from a small lot. Great truck, one key. The lot said to get a spare on his own. He figured fifty bucks at the hardware store. That's not how Chevy truck keys work anymore.

He called the dealer and they wanted 200 for a programmed spare. He called me next and asked if that dealer price was real. I told him it was. The transponder chip inside a Chevy key is what makes it expensive at the dealer. That chip talks to the truck's immobilizer every time you turn the ignition, and without that handshake the engine won't start. Dealers charge a premium for programming it. I charge around 95.

I met him at the lot and used my VVDI2 to read the ID46 chip data from his working key and clone it onto a fresh blank so the truck's immobilizer accepted it without a full security reset. His smart key, FCC ID , had buttons including remote start. I cut the blade, cloned the chip, and synced the remote functions on-site.

He drove off the lot with two working keys for less than the dealer wanted for one. That second key also means his next replacement is an add-a-key job instead of all-keys-lost, which saves even more down the line.
