Out near Ocean View Hills in Otay Mesa, I got a call from a woman who drove for work and put real miles on her 2007 Q7. The flip key had been falling apart for months. The blade would not lock into position anymore, so she had been pressing it closed with her thumb every time she put it in the ignition. She was also holding the housing together slightly when she turned it, because the pivot had worn enough that the whole thing felt like it might separate in her hand.

The chip still read cleanly, matched what the car expected, and the remote was transmitting normally. The only thing wrong was the housing itself and the worn blade.
I transferred the board and chip into a new flip shell, cut a replacement blade to her vehicle, and confirmed the remote and ignition functions worked before I handed it back. The blade locked in solid. The buttons had resistance again. She turned it in the ignition without holding anything together.
She saved a good chunk compared to the full replacement route. The dealer was not wrong that the old shell was done. They were just selling the wrong fix.
