2003 BMW M5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to adding a spare?

More, on any BMW. When you still have one working key, adding a spare is a cleaner job. The immobilizer already has valid data to work from, and enrollment goes faster. When all keys are gone, the process changes. The existing key memory has to be cleared, new security data generated, and the fresh keys enrolled from scratch. That takes more time and more specialized equipment.

Q: Do aftermarket BMW keys actually work, or should I stick with OEM spec?

It depends on the source, and the E39 is more forgiving than newer BMWs. The older immobilizer system on this generation is less restrictive than what you find on later module-based platforms, so some quality aftermarket keys do program and function correctly. That said, the cheap fobs floating around online are inconsistent. Some program fine, some pair but lose sync after a few weeks, and some just don't take at all.

Q: My 2003 M5 starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Is the fob dead?

Not necessarily. On the E39 remote head key, the transponder that starts the car and the transmitter that handles lock and unlock are two separate functions in the same fob. If the car starts but the buttons do nothing, the most likely culprits are the CR2032 battery or a synced signal that drifted out of sequence. Swap the battery first. If that doesn't bring it back, the fob may need to be re-synced to the car.

Q: Can someone use my stolen fob to take my M5 later, or is it really locked out once you wipe the key memory?

Once the key memory is cleared and new keys are enrolled, the stolen fob is done. The immobilizer on this car works by recognizing specific registered transponder data. Wipe that data and register new keys, and the old fob no longer matches anything the car is looking for. It won't start the engine and it won't operate the locks. It is not a situation where someone can re-enable it without access to the car's immobilizer system and the right equipment.

2003 BMW M5 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

He was at the craft brewery near the Encanto Border side of Lemon Grove when he noticed his jacket was gone from the back of his chair. Keys, wallet, phone. He borrowed the bartender's phone, called the police, then his wife, then me.

His 2003 BMW M5 was sitting in the lot with zero keys. The dealer told his wife the car would need to be towed in, it would take four to five business days, and they were recommending a full immobilizer service since the stolen fob could still open the doors. The estimate was not small.

I was there within the hour. All-keys-lost on an E39 means wiping the existing key data so the stolen fob becomes electronically useless, then enrolling fresh keys from scratch. I accessed the immobilizer through the diagnostic port, cleared the old key slots, and registered two new remote head keys. The blade on this car is a specific profile, so I decoded the lock cylinder and cut both blades on site.

His wife pulled into the lot just as I was finishing the second key. He drove the M5 home that night. Two working fobs, the stolen one permanently locked out. The dealer's route would have cost him the car for almost a week on top of a tow fee. He saved a good chunk and slept in his own house.

The part that stuck with me: he kept saying the dealer acted like there was no other option. There was.

BMW M5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 2003 BMW M5?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. BMW dealers typically quote replacement key jobs in the hundreds, and that is before any towing, diagnostics billed separately, or wait time for a VIN-ordered key. With EZ Car Keyz, you get the fob, the blade cut to your car, and the programming done on site in Lemon Grove, no tow required. The 2003 M5 is an E39, which means the key system is mature and well-understood.
