I got a call from a guy in Winter Gardens, out in Lakeside. Third shift, warehouse job, got home around 1 a.m. and his key just stopped working. Car was sitting in the driveway, completely locked out, and he had no spare.
He'd already tried the obvious stuff. Held the fob up to the door, clicked it a dozen times, even tried replacing the battery with one from a TV remote just to test. Nothing. He figured his only move was a tow to a dealer 25 miles out and a long wait until morning.
I told him to stay put.
When I pulled up, he was sitting on the front step with his phone. I connected to the OBD port and ran the security access sequence through the BCM. His was an all-keys-lost situation, meaning the car had no recognized fob in memory at all. That requires a full security reset before you can enroll anything new. It's not a fast process, there's a timed security delay built into the module that you just have to sit through, but it runs cleanly on these when the BCM is healthy.
Cut the flip blade to his ignition, programmed the new key, tested lock, unlock, and start in the driveway. He was back inside before 2 a.m.
He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him on a previous key job, and his eyes went wide when I told him what he owed me. I didn't press the comparison. The work speaks.
