I got a call from someone in Downtown Santee, parked outside one of the shops near Mast Boulevard. She had a 2004 H2 and one key left. The fob had been getting flaky for a few weeks, and that morning it stopped locking the doors entirely. The key still started the truck, but she wanted a working spare before things got worse.
When I got there she told me she had already tried a new battery. Popped it in herself, seated it fine. The remote still would not respond.
I checked the fob internals. The battery contact on the negative side had a slight corrosion spot, small enough that a fresh battery would make contact most of the time but not consistently. That was the remote issue. Cleaned the contact, reseated the CR2032, and the lock and unlock came right back.
The bigger job was cutting and programming a second key entirely. She wanted a full spare, not just a patched-up original. I cut the blade to her vehicle on the spot, programmed the transponder through the OBD port so the immobilizer would recognize it, and then synced the remote. Tested the start twice, walked every button, checked range from across the lot.
She mentioned she had called the dealer first. They quoted her a wait of a few days for a parts order. She did not have a few days, and she did not want to drive to a dealership with one questionable key in her hand anyway.
Done on site. Both keys working before I left.
