2009 Hummer H2
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2009 Hummer H2 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from someone parked near RB Town Center in Rancho Bernardo. Keys stolen. Not misplaced, not locked inside. Stolen. That changes the whole conversation.

With a lost key it is mostly about access and reprogramming. With a stolen key, there is a person somewhere who still has hardware that was paired to that vehicle. The owner knew that. She was not panicked, just direct: she wanted the old keys dead before anything else.

I pulled up, connected to the OBD port, and ran the key memory wipe through my diagnostic equipment. Every previously registered key, gone. The H2 uses a transponder system where the chip in the key has to be recognized by the immobilizer before the engine will run. Once I cleared the memory, the old keys became useless metal. They could turn the ignition all day and the engine would not fire.

Then I registered her new key, cut the blade to the vehicle, and tested it. Start, lock, unlock, everything working before I packed up.

She asked about the dealer almost as an afterthought. I told her what most people find out the hard way: the dealer route means towing a car with no working key across town, waiting for parts, and paying a lot more for the same outcome. She saved a good chunk and did not have to move the vehicle at all.

The thing that stayed with me was how calm she was about the whole thing once she understood the stolen keys were actually deauthorized. That part matters more than people realize.
