2006 Hummer H2
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a remote key and how do the different parts work together?

The 2006 H2 remote is doing two separate jobs in one unit. The key blade cuts into the ignition cylinder mechanically, same as any key. The transponder chip inside the key head talks to the vehicle's immobilizer when you turn the ignition, and the engine won't run without that handshake being recognized. Separately, the remote buttons send a wireless signal for the door locks and rear hatch.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much for a replacement key on a 2006 H2?

Dealer pricing on these reflects parts markup through the parts department, shop labor rates, and the inconvenience of their process: you either drive it in or tow it. For a truck this age, a lot of dealers will tell you they need to order the key and have you come back. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in the CSUSM Area, cut and program on the spot, and you pay a fraction of what they wanted.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need someone with equipment?

The 2006 H2 does have an onboard add-a-key procedure for the remote buttons, but it only works if you already have one working programmed key to start the sequence. It's an ignition-cycle-based process. If you're all-keys-lost, that self-program option is gone and you need someone with the right programming equipment to enroll the transponder and pair the remote.

Q: My H2 cranks but immediately stalls when I use my key. What's going on?

That crank-and-stall pattern on the 2006 H2 points to an immobilizer issue, not a mechanical one. The engine fires because the ignition cylinder is fine, then cuts out because the vehicle security system didn't recognize the transponder. A few things cause this: a worn or damaged chip inside the key head, a key that lost its programming, or a failing antenna ring around the ignition cylinder that reads the chip. I diagnose this on site.

2006 Hummer H2 Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the CSUSM Area, over by the edge of campus. He had his 2006 H2 and one working key. He wanted a spare made before the original quit on him entirely, which is honestly the smartest reason someone can call a mobile locksmith.

He mentioned the remote had been getting flaky for a few months. Range was short, sometimes it wouldn't lock from ten feet away, and once the truck hadn't started right the first try. He figured it was all connected.

I pulled up, looked at the fob, and the CR2032 was reading low. Not dead, just tired enough to cause exactly the behavior he described. Weak battery in these remotes doesn't just kill range. It can make the chip communication inconsistent enough to cause a slow crank hesitation that reads like an immobilizer hiccup.

We swapped the battery, cut and programmed a new key on site, tested both keys through full lock, unlock, and start cycles before I packed up. He went from one questionable key to two solid ones without going anywhere.

That's the call to make before you're stranded.

Hummer H2 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2006 Hummer H2 remote have?▼

Three buttons. On this remote, you're looking at lock, unlock, and a rear hatch or cargo release function. All three get programmed and tested on site. I don't hand the key back until every button is confirmed working on your specific truck.
