2008 Hummer H2 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy out in Fairbanks Ranch, big iron gate, long driveway, H2 sitting right in front of the garage. He had one key left and it had been through some things.
The rubber grip was cracked off the head, the blade was worn, and he was pretty sure the chip inside was on its way out because the engine had started hesitating before it would finally fire. He wanted a spare made before the one working key gave up completely.
That last part matters. A lot of people wait until they are standing in a parking lot with nothing. He did not.
I pulled up, verified the existing key still started the vehicle, and got to work cutting a fresh replacement from scratch. The blade on these keys needs to match the ignition cylinder exactly, and a worn original can sometimes throw off a straight duplication, so I read the cuts carefully before I touched anything. Once the blade was right, I connected to the OBD port and registered the new key to the immobilizer. Tested it cold, tested it again. Started both times without hesitation.
He held up the cracked original and kind of laughed at it. Said he had been meaning to do this for two years. The whole job was done in his driveway, no tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting for parts to be ordered. Fraction of what the dealer wanted, and he walked away with a working spare and peace of mind.
The H2 is not a complicated key job. It just needs the right equipment and someone who has done it before.
