My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for us. We carry the tools to pull a broken blade out of a Kia ignition cylinder without damaging the cylinder itself. Once it is out, we assess whether the cylinder needs any attention and then cut a new key from your vehicle's lock data or by decoding the lock directly. If the electronic portion of the smart key survived intact, we can often transplant the internals into a fresh shell and blade, which avoids a full reprogram. If everything is damaged, we cut and program a complete replacement on site.

What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

Your 2023 Stinger uses a smart key, which is a fob with a physical blade tucked inside it and an electronic transponder registered to your specific car. The transponder communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer every time you use it. Without that handshake, the car will not start even if you physically turn something in the ignition.

The five buttons handle remote functions. The blade is the backup for getting into the car if the fob battery dies or the system has an issue.

The important thing to understand is that the blade alone does nothing. A key cut to your car but never programmed to the immobilizer will unlock the door and that is it. The programming step is what makes it a working key, and that step requires diagnostic equipment.

My Kia is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do first?

Start with the fob battery. A weak cell is the single most common cause of that warning on Kia smart keys, and the CR2032 in these fobs can read as installed and still be too low to communicate reliably. Swap it with a fresh one before assuming anything bigger is wrong.

If you have a push-to-start setup and the warning comes up at the button, try holding the fob flat against the start button itself and pressing the brake. That taps a backup inductive path built into the start button area, which works even when the battery is nearly dead.

Still getting the warning after a fresh battery and the backup method? That points to something other than the fob. I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or is there a catch?

There is a real catch on the 2023 Stinger that catches people off guard. The fob has to match the factory FCC ID on the label for this vehicle. If it does, a proper diagnostic tool can register it. If it does not, no tool finishes the job, period.

The other issue is the programming path itself. This generation requires an online security authorization step, not just a local OBD connection. Some tools read the PIN without a problem but then fail at the actual registration because they cannot complete that online handshake. If the shop you bring it to does not have equipment that handles that full path, you leave with an unregistered fob, same as the guy who called me after exactly that situation.

Bring the fob with you when you call. I verify the ID before I drive out.

If I lose both keys, is that a bigger problem than losing just one?

Bigger job, yes, but not a dead end. An all-keys-lost situation on the 2023 Stinger means the immobilizer has to be reset before any new key can be registered. There are no existing fobs to use as a reference, so the process starts from scratch through the diagnostic port.

The reset involves a timed sequence built into the security system, so it takes longer than a standard spare-key job. Plan for more time on site. The old lost fobs get erased during the process so they cannot be used to start the car if someone finds them later, which is worth knowing if the keys were stolen rather than just misplaced.
