2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone up in Crest on a Tuesday afternoon.

She had one key for her 2017 Discovery Sport, and it had been acting up for about two weeks - working fine in the morning, then refusing to unlock the doors by the time she left work. She figured it was the battery, swapped it herself, and for a day or two it seemed better. Then it quit entirely. No response from the fob, and the dash was throwing a key-not-detected warning every time she got near the car.

She'd already called the Land Rover dealer. They told her to tow it in and said they'd need to order parts. No timeline. She lives in Crest, works in El Cajon, and towing plus waiting days with no car wasn't a real option.

I drove out to her. She met me in the driveway, fob in hand, looking at it like it had personally wronged her.

First thing I did was check the module state before touching anything else. On these Discovery Sports, that step matters more than people realize. If the keyless module isn't in a condition to accept programming, you find out before you've wasted an hour going in circles. Hers was fine - the module wasn't the issue.

What I found after digging in was a combination of a marginal battery connection and a fob that needed to be re-paired. The fob itself was still good. Thirty-five minutes at the vehicle, tested every function before I packed up, and she was driving again before it got dark.

She asked what the dealer would have charged by the time it was all said and done. I told her to factor in the tow, the wait, and possibly a rental. She did the math herself.
