2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does the 2018 Discovery Sport use it?

Your fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's immobilizer and body control electronics. When the system recognizes a paired fob nearby, it authorizes the engine to start. The fob also carries a physical emergency blade tucked inside, which is used to unlock the door manually if the fob battery dies or the electronics have an issue. The fob has five buttons and runs on a CR2032 battery.

Q: How long does the Land Rover dealer process take for a key replacement?

Longer than most people expect. The fob usually cannot be programmed from shelf stock at the dealership -- it often has to be ordered, and that order goes through the JLR parts network. Owners on Land Rover forums have reported waits ranging from about a week to several weeks depending on parts availability at the time. In periods of tighter supply, the wait has stretched considerably longer.

Q: My 2018 Discovery Sport start button is showing a key warning but the fob battery is new. What is going on?

This is one of the more common complaints I see from Discovery Sport owners. A fresh battery does not always fix it, and here is why: the battery contacts inside the fob can get a slight oxidation or film on them, especially in coastal areas like Cardiff-by-the-Sea where salt air is a factor. The new cell sits on a contact that is not making clean connection, and you get the same intermittent behavior as a dead battery.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2018 Discovery Sport. Is an all-keys-lost situation something a locksmith can handle?

Yes, but it is the more involved version of the job. When no working fob is present, the diagnostic process requires security-level access to the vehicle's immobilizer to wipe the existing key memory and register new fobs from scratch. The old keys, wherever they are, get invalidated in the process so they cannot be used to start the car.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, parked near the beach access off San Elijo. She had one working key for her 2018 Discovery Sport and wanted a spare before something happened to it.

Reasonable thinking. She had already called the Land Rover dealer and been told the fob would need to be ordered and that she was looking at days, possibly longer, before the key would even arrive at their service department.

She found me, I told her I could come to her that same afternoon.

When I pulled up she was sitting on the tailgate of a different car, watching the waves. The Discovery Sport was right there in the lot. I opened up, connected to the OBD port, and got into the vehicle security system with JLR-compatible diagnostic software. Pulled up the key management menu, verified the existing fob was seated and communicating, then walked through the pairing sequence for the second fob. Cut the emergency blade to match. Full button test, start test, lock and unlock from distance. Everything clean.

She asked me how long the dealer process actually takes. I told her what I have heard from Land Rover owners on forums and in person -- ordering through the dealer network can mean days waiting just for the fob to arrive, and that is before anyone touches a programming tool. She nodded like she had already figured that out.

The job took about 45 minutes on site, including the test cycle. She saved a good chunk compared to the dealer quote she had been given, and she left with both keys working.

Land Rover Discovery Sport Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Land Rover dealer to get a replacement key for my 2018 Discovery Sport?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with proper JLR diagnostic capability can cut and program a smart key for your 2018 Discovery Sport on site. The dealer is not the only option, even though Land Rover service advisors sometimes imply that it is. The real limitation at a dealer is often not the programming -- it is the parts pipeline.
