It happens most often with three scenarios: a hardware-only copy made at a retail key kiosk with no chip, a damaged or de-tuned chip from a key that took some abuse, or an all-keys-lost situation where a previously programmed key got erased or corrupted. On the dash you may see an indicator light tied to the security system staying on or flashing after the stall.

This is not a fuel pump issue, not a battery issue, and not something a parts-store code reader is going to diagnose cleanly. The fix is a properly cut and programmed replacement key. I can confirm the root cause on site before cutting anything.

I bought a replacement key online. Can I program it myself?

Not on this vehicle. The 2003 Aviator's transponder system does not have a self-service onboard relearn sequence the way some simpler older vehicles do. Programming a new key requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to communicate with the immobilizer and register the chip. If you already have one working key, the process is shorter. If you have zero working keys, there's a longer security access sequence involved. Either way, the key you bought online still needs professional equipment to pair it. The blade also needs to be cut to your specific vehicle, which a pre-cut online key won't be. Bring the blank and I can cut and program it, or I can supply the right blank myself.
