2018 Lincoln MKC
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement smart key last on a 2018 MKC?

The programming itself does not wear out. Once the fob is registered to the immobilizer, it stays paired. Battery life on a CR2450 in normal use typically runs one to two years depending on how often you're triggering passive entry. The shell and buttons are what wear first. A quality housing lasts several years of daily use without issue.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. Everything I make is covered under warranty. That said, if a properly programmed fob goes dark, the cause is usually on the vehicle side, not the key. The 2018 MKC has a body control module and immobilizer that can develop communication faults independent of the key itself. A key that worked fine for two weeks and then started throwing a warning or refusing to start the engine is worth diagnosing before assuming the fob failed.

Q: My 2018 MKC shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is fresh. What's going on?

This comes up on MKC forums more than you'd expect. A new battery fixes it most of the time, but not always. A few other things can cause a persistent key-not-detected warning even with a good CR2450 in the fob. First, check that the battery is seated correctly and the contacts inside the fob aren't bent or corroded. A slightly cocked battery reads as a weak connection. Second, if you've got two fobs, test both.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2018 MKC. Is all-keys-lost actually doable outside a dealership?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2018 MKC requires diagnostic equipment to clear the existing key memory and enroll new fobs, but that's exactly what I carry. The process wipes the old keys so they can't start the car, then registers the new ones. It takes longer than a simple add-a-key job because of the security sequence involved, but it's a standard mobile call.

2018 Lincoln MKC Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Saturday night in Ramona, near San Diego Country Estates. A couple had dinner, came out to the parking lot, and the MKC just sat there. Fob dead. Neither button press did anything. They knew push-to-start was involved but had no idea the fob itself was the problem, and they definitely didn't know there was a way to start the car without the fob working over the air.

They were already mentally scheduling a Monday dealer appointment when someone suggested they call me.

I was about fifteen minutes out. The CR2450 in their fob had given up entirely, which is how you get a key-not-detected warning with no range at all. Swapped the battery on the hood of the car, walked them through what the fob backup start actually does, and then programmed a fresh spare so they'd have a second key going forward. The whole thing was done before the parking lot cleared out.

They drove home that night. The dealer option would have meant leaving the car, arranging a ride, waiting until Monday, and paying considerably more for the privilege. Sometimes the best part of this job is just being the one who actually shows up.

Lincoln MKC Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket fobs for the 2018 Lincoln MKC?▼

Both options exist, and I'll tell you exactly what I carry. The MKC fob shares its electronic architecture with several Ford and Lincoln platforms from the same generation, so Ford-sourced blanks with the correct transponder chip and matching frequency work identically to the Lincoln-badged OEM version. The factory FCC ID on the fob is what tells you whether the internal hardware matches, not the logo on the shell. I stock blanks verified to that spec.
