First thing to check: try the key in the door lock. If it feels tight and positive there but sloppy in the ignition, the cylinder is the issue. If it's sloppy everywhere, the key is probably worn and a freshly cut replacement may tighten things up.

Either way, a worn ignition cylinder on a 1998 626 is a serviceable problem. I can rekey or replace the cylinder and cut a new key to match. That's a lot less painful than people expect when they first hear "ignition cylinder."
