1998 Mazda 626 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy up in Dictionary Hill on a Sunday. He was parked outside a breakfast spot in Spring Valley, stuck. Said he'd snapped his key in the door lock trying to force it when the lock felt stiff. Half the blade was inside the cylinder, and his only other key was back at the house with his wife, who wasn't answering her phone.
He'd already called the dealer. They wanted him to tow it in and said they couldn't look at it until Tuesday at the earliest.
I pulled up in the service van and got to work on the door lock. Extracted the broken piece with a hook pick and a pair of extractors, no drama. The cylinder itself was fine, just dry inside from years without lubrication, which is exactly why it was stiff in the first place and why the blade gave out under pressure.
Once the lock was clear, I decoded the cut from the cylinder, cut him a fresh key on site, and lubed the lock while I was in there. Tried it in the door, tried it in the ignition, both smooth.
He mentioned the dealer quote almost as a joke. I just told him to call his wife and let her know she didn't need to drive over.
