2001 Mazda 626
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2001 Mazda 626 actually use?

It's a mechanical key. Metal blade, no remote, no chip to program. The 626 in this generation used a standard edge-cut key that works the ignition cylinder and the door locks directly. Replacement is a cutting job, not a programming job. If you've seen quotes that include programming fees or chip cloning for this car, those don't apply here. You just need the key cut to your vehicle.

Q: My 2001 Mazda 626 won't turn over. Could it be a key problem?

On this car, the key's only job is mechanical. It turns the cylinder, and the cylinder signals the ignition. If the engine won't crank, start by checking whether the steering column is locked, because a locked column will make the key feel frozen and people sometimes mistake that for a key problem. Turn the wheel slightly while applying light pressure to the key and it should release.

Q: I only have one key left for my 626. Should I get a spare made before it fails completely?

Strongly worth doing. Late-model 626 ignition cylinders have enough wear history that a key failing or snapping is a real possibility, especially if the original has years of use on it. Getting a spare cut while you still have a working key is easier and cheaper than an all-keys-lost situation, which can mean decoding a worn lock or pulling the cylinder entirely.

Q: Can any locksmith cut a key for a 2001 Mazda 626, or do I need a dealer?

Any locksmith with the right key blanks and cutting equipment can handle this. The 626 in this year does not require dealer-only tools or access to a secure system. A mobile locksmith can cut by code if the key code is on file, or decode the lock directly on site. The dealer is an option, but the wait time tends to be longer and the cost is higher for a job this simple.

2001 Mazda 626 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked near a shop off Roosevelt Avenue in Old Town National City. She had a 2001 Mazda 626, one key left, and it had snapped at the shoulder. Not fully broken off in the ignition, just cracked through where the blade meets the bow. She'd been babying it for weeks.

She told me she almost went to the dealer first, then looked up what that was going to run her and decided to call instead.

I pulled up, decoded the lock right there in the lot, and cut her a replacement on the spot. No tow, no appointment, no waiting three days for parts to arrive. The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes including the time we spent talking about her dog in the back seat.

She saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and she drove out of there with a key that actually fit the way it was supposed to.

Mazda 626 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition of my 2001 Mazda 626. Can you get it out?▼

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. The 626 uses a conventional ignition cylinder, so there's no complicated electronics involved in the extraction itself. I use hook and extractor tools sized for the keyway to work the broken piece out without pulling or damaging the cylinder. Once it's out, I cut a new key on site.
