I got a call on a Tuesday morning from a preschool director whose CX-50 had been giving her trouble all week. Not dead-in-the-driveway trouble. Worse, actually. The kind where it works sometimes and you start doubting yourself.
She was in the lot near her school in Downtown Chula Vista. Staff arriving at seven, parents rolling in right after. The car had been randomly throwing a key-not-detected warning during start attempts, and she'd gotten in the habit of holding the fob against the steering column area to coax it into recognizing her. It worked often enough that she kept putting off the fix.
Then it stopped working at all.
The dealer told her four days out for an appointment. She called me instead.
I pulled in during nap time. Quiet lot, good light. I opened the fob first, before touching anything else. The CR2025 looked fine at a glance but the positive contact had a slight inward bow, probably from the last battery swap. It wasn't making solid contact under load. That explained the intermittent behavior perfectly: cold start with a firm grip on the fob, it would seat enough to work. Warm interior, fob sitting loose in a cup holder, it would drop out.
I replaced the battery with a fresh CR2025, straightened the contact, and confirmed the housing closed flat. Then I ran a diagnostic scan through the OBD port to verify the fob was registering cleanly and check for anything stored in the immobilizer module. Everything came back healthy. No new fob needed, no key programming required, just a contact issue that looked like something much bigger.
I walked every function with her before I left: door lock, unlock, the liftgate, and the panic button. All four buttons. Solid on every one.
She made pickup that afternoon without holding anything against the steering column. The dealer would have had her waiting until Friday.
