I got a text from a farm manager out in the Brown Field Area of Otay Mesa. His 2008 Mazda CX-7 was parked on a gravel access road between rows of avocado trees, and he was not getting anywhere with the key. The fob had stopped responding, and when he pulled the emergency blade out of the fob body to try the door manually, the lock cylinder would not turn. Somebody had disabled the manual lock at some point. He was stuck.
He sent me his GPS pin. I loaded up the van and drove out to him. No shop, no tow truck, just a gravel road and two guys figuring it out between the trees.
I decoded the lock on site and cut a replacement blade that would actually work the cylinder. Then I used my diagnostic equipment to register the new fob to the vehicle through the OBD port, which is how these smart key systems have to be done. The immobilizer has to see the new key before the engine will run, and that step requires the right tools talking to the right module.
The CX-7 started right there on that gravel road. He did not need a tow. He did not need to take half a day off to sit in a dealer waiting room. He was back to his route in under an hour, and what he paid me was a fraction of what a dealer would have quoted, before even factoring in the tow from a location no flatbed was reaching easily.
