I was out in Loma Alta on a Saturday, finishing up a job near the older residential stretch off Oceanside Boulevard, when a call came in from a woman parked in a flea market lot nearby. She was a vintage furniture dealer, had her SUV loaded up, and her 2009 CX-7 was sitting there with nothing happening when she pressed the start button.
She had one fob. It had been getting flaky for a couple weeks, shorter range, then intermittent, and that morning it just stopped being recognized at the push-button start entirely. She'd already called the dealer. They told her she'd need a weekday appointment, possibly need to leave the car, and parts would have to be ordered. She wasn't going to leave a loaded CX-7 in a flea market lot until Tuesday.
I got to her about twenty minutes later.
First thing I did was pop the fob and check the battery. CR2025, which is correct for this key, but the one in there was reading low on my tester. Swapped it, seated it properly, and the car still wasn't recognizing the fob consistently. That told me the fob itself had either lost its pairing or had a deeper issue, and given the age, re-registration was the right call.
I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer system, and walked through the registration procedure. The CX-7 has a timed security sequence built into that process, so you wait it out. Can't rush it. While the countdown ran, she kept an eye on her table across the lot.
New fob programmed, emergency blade cut to the vehicle, all functions tested on site. She drove out of that lot on her own and paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted her. The car doesn't care who programmed the key.
