A mobile dog groomer was parked near the car wash vacuum stations off San Elijo Avenue in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, loading her gear after a long day, when her 2024 Nissan Z stopped responding to the fob. Not dead, not locked out.
Just the kind of in-between failure that messes with your head: the push-button start still worked if she held the fob right up to it, but the door handles weren't waking up, and the lock and unlock buttons were hit or miss.
She called because a friend had told her the dealer was the only option for anything Intelligent Key related on a new Z. She half believed it, which I get. It's a newer car, and there's a lot of noise out there about late-model Nissans needing dealer-only procedures.
When I got to her, I started where I always start. Battery out of the fob, fresh CR2032, contacts wiped and checked. Back together. That got the handles responding again, but the lock button was still flaking on the driver side. At that point I knew the fob itself had an issue, not just the battery.
I pulled my programmer, connected to the OBD port, and went through the Intelligent Key registration process to pair a replacement fob to her car's immobilizer. Took about 25 minutes including verification. I walked every function: door lock, door unlock, the handle touch sensors on both sides, and the start sequence. All clean.
She was back on the road before it got dark, grooming bag loaded in the trunk. The dealer had quoted her an appointment three days out. She didn't need three days. She needed 25 minutes in the same parking lot where it happened.
