Got a call from someone parked off Otay Mesa Road, over in Otay Mesa West. She had the fob in her hand and was clicking it at the car like it was going to change its mind. Doors would not respond. Nothing.

I pulled up, popped the fob open right there on the hood. The CR2032 inside was original. Twenty-five years old, give or take, sitting in a fob that had probably been on a keychain through three California summers in a hot car. The battery still showed a little voltage on the meter, which is the tricky part. Just enough to register as not dead. Not enough to actually transmit.
Swapped the cell, cleaned the contacts, reseated everything. Walked the four buttons one at a time: lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. All of them came back clean.
She asked if I needed to reprogram anything. I told her the fob just needed power to do its job, and now it had it. Five minutes on site. She was back on the road before anyone in a dealer waiting room would have finished filling out paperwork.
The dealer comparison came up anyway, like it always does. She had already called them. They wanted her to tow the car in. I drove to her.
