Out in the Viejas Area, I got a call from a guy who said his Alero "just stopped working." He meant the fob. He'd been manually unlocking and locking for two weeks before he finally called, which is pretty normal. People put up with a lot before they reach out.
When I pulled up, the car started fine with the key blade. So the transponder enrollment was intact. The issue was purely the remote side, the four-button RF portion had dropped out of the body control module's memory. Happens on these. It doesn't take much, sometimes a dead CR2032 that sat discharged for a while is enough to cause it.
I pulled the battery out of the fob right there on the hood of my van, confirmed the CR2032 was borderline dead, swapped it fresh, and ran the onboard enrollment sequence to re-pair the remote. Locked, unlocked, trunk release, panic. All four buttons tested in front of him.
He asked about the dealer out of curiosity. I told him what I'd heard from other customers on these. He just nodded and said he wished he'd called two weeks earlier instead of walking around with a bare key like it was the nineties.
Whole visit was under twenty minutes. He didn't have to move the car once.
