How many buttons does the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero remote have?

What is the difference between the remote part of my Alero key and the chip inside it?

Two separate systems in one key. The transponder chip sits in the head of the blade and communicates with the immobilizer through a short-range signal when you turn the ignition. No RF signal, no battery needed for that part. It either matches what the immobilizer expects or the engine won't run.

The remote buttons are a different story entirely. That side uses RF and runs off the CR2032 battery. It talks to the body control module to handle lock, unlock, trunk, and panic functions wirelessly.

You can have one working and the other not. Engine starts fine but buttons are dead, that's the RF side. Buttons work but the engine cranks and immediately stalls, that points to the transponder or immobilizer side. Knowing which one failed changes the job completely, and I figure that out before I start anything.

What if I need a replacement key late at night or on a weekend out here in the Viejas Area?

Call anyway. We run seven days a week, 6 AM to 11:30 PM, including weekends and most holidays. Evening calls are not a problem. No extra charge for the time of day.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2002 Alero. Can I program it myself or do I need someone to do it?

Accepted Answer

The RF remote side on the 2002 Alero can be enrolled through an onboard sequence, so in theory the fob programming piece has a DIY path. The catch is the sequence has to be done correctly, and if there are already fobs enrolled or the procedure gets interrupted, it can wipe existing remotes out of memory without finishing the new one. Then you're back to square one.

The transponder chip side of any replacement key blade is a different matter. That requires a programmer. You can't do that one at home.

If you bought a fob online and want it handled cleanly without risking your existing working key, having it done on site is the safer call. And if the replacement fob you ordered has the wrong internal coding for your vehicle, we find that out fast and can source the right one.

Question 5

My 2002 Alero starts fine but immediately stalls right after. Could that be a key or immobilizer problem?

Accepted Answer

That start-and-stall pattern is a classic sign the immobilizer did not recognize the transponder. The engine gets permission to crank but the security system cuts fuel almost immediately after. On the 2002 Alero you may also notice the security light staying on or flashing on the dash when this happens.

Before assuming the worst, check whether it happens with every key you own or just one. If a second key starts the car normally, the chip in the first key has likely lost its enrollment. If every key does it, the issue is on the vehicle side.

Either way, it's diagnosable and fixable on site. I bring the programmer to re-enroll keys and can read what the security system is seeing. You don't need a tow to the dealer to sort this out.
