This can happen after a key is copied at a hardware store without proper transponder programming, or if the immobilizer itself has a fault. It can also show up if someone used a key that looks identical but carries the wrong chip or no chip at all.

If your fob is working fine but the car will not stay running, the remote side is not your problem. The transponder side is. That is a diagnostic job and we handle it on site.

Can I program a second fob myself on a 2003 Alero if I already have one working fob?

Yes, actually, and this is one of those older GM setups where an onboard sequence exists for the remote fob side. If you have a working fob already, there is a procedure using the ignition and existing fob that can enroll an additional remote without any external tool.

The catch is that the sequence clears all previously registered fobs and re-registers everything you present during that session. If you only run one fob through it, your old one stops working. You have to do both at the same time.

The transponder key programming is a separate matter and does require equipment on an all-keys-lost scenario. But if you just want a second fob added and you still have your original, it is worth a call because the job may be simpler than you expect.
