Downtown Oceanside, mid-morning. The owner of a 1998 Bravada flagged me down in a parking lot off the main strip. She had the fob in her hand but the truck hadn't responded to it in two days. Doors still opened with the key blade, engine started fine, but the remote was completely dead to the world.
She had already put in a new battery. Said she bought it at a drugstore the night before.
I asked to see the fob. The CR2032 was in there, but someone had pried the shell open with something flat and bent the positive contact slightly away from the battery face. Not touching cleanly. I straightened the contact, cleaned both sides with a dry cloth, snapped the shell closed, and tested it standing next to the truck. All four buttons came back. Lock, unlock, panic, hatch. The whole thing took about four minutes.
She laughed a little. Said she had already called the dealer and was dreading the wait.
That is the job sometimes. No scan tool, no programming, just finding the actual problem instead of selling around it. When she did eventually need a spare fob added, she called me back. That one took a bit longer and needed the relearn procedure, but it was still same-day, still done in the parking lot, still way less than the dealer route.
