Out in Buena Creek, I got a call from a guy who had been driving his 2001 Bravada with a key that only half worked. The remote had been dead for months. He figured it was just the battery. He swapped it, nothing changed, so he gave up and started living with manually locking every door.
Then the key itself stopped starting the truck. Engine would crank, catch for a second, and die. That is the immobilizer doing its job when it does not recognize the transponder. I tested the fob first. The housing had a hairline crack along the back seam, and one of the battery contacts had bent just enough to break the circuit intermittently. A fresh CR2032 seated correctly and the remote was back. Locks, unlock, panic, all four buttons working.
Then the key. Confirmed the transponder chip was the issue, enrolled it through the OBD port, and let the system complete the handshake. Cranked the engine. Ran clean on the first try.
He stood there for a second and said he had no idea those were two separate problems. Neither had the dealer, apparently, because the quote was for the whole system.
He saved a good chunk. Job took about 25 minutes on site.
