1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call out to the Viejas Area in Alpine from a guy who drives a 1996 Silhouette. His key had snapped off right at the bow, the part you grip, and the blade was still sitting in the ignition cylinder. He had already tried fishing it out with a pair of tweezers and made it worse.

When I pulled up, the broken piece was wedged in at a slight angle. That happens when someone tries to turn the cylinder after the break. Extraction without damaging a 28-year-old cylinder takes patience, the right picks, and knowing when to stop and change your angle. Took about ten minutes to get it out clean.

From there I decoded the cylinder directly and cut a new key on site. Tested it in the ignition, the driver door, and the side cargo door lock. Smooth in all three.

He mentioned the dealer told him the whole ignition assembly might need to come out. That would have been a half-day job at a shop rate that hurt to think about. He saved a good chunk going mobile instead.
