Does the 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette key have remote buttons built in, or is the fob separate?

Separate. On the 2002 Silhouette, the ignition key is a transponder key without any remote buttons on it. The remote fob for locking and unlocking doors is a standalone piece. So you are dealing with two different items: the transponder key that starts the van, and the key fob that handles the doors. When we make a replacement ignition key, we are programming the transponder chip to the immobilizer. The fob is a separate job if that is also lost or broken.

What is a transponder key and why does it need programming?

The key blade cuts and turns the ignition like any metal key, but inside the plastic bow there is a small chip. When you turn the key, the immobilizer ring around the ignition column sends a signal to that chip. The chip responds with a code. If the code matches what the vehicle security system has on file, the engine is allowed to run. If nothing responds, or the code is wrong, the van may crank and immediately die.

A freshly cut blank that has not been programmed has no code the vehicle recognizes. That is why cutting alone is not enough. The chip has to be enrolled to that specific van, which is what we do through the OBD port on site.

Why does the dealer charge so much more for a replacement key on a 2002 Silhouette?

My 2002 Silhouette cranks fine but shuts off right after it starts. Is that the transponder key failing?

That pattern, starts then immediately stalls, is one of the classic signs the immobilizer is not reading the key. On these early-2000s GM vans, the immobilizer ring around the ignition column can degrade, or the chip inside the key bow can crack or shift, especially if the key has taken any drops or got wet over the years.

Before assuming a fuel or mechanical problem, check the obvious: is the chip housing on the key cracked or damaged? Try the spare key if you have one. If the spare starts and stays running, the issue is with the primary key, not the engine. If both keys do the same thing, the immobilizer or its antenna ring is where I would look next. Either way, that is something I diagnose and handle on site.

Question 5

I found a replacement key blank online for the 2002 Silhouette. Can I just have it cut at a hardware store and skip the programming?

Accepted Answer

Cutting it at a hardware store gets you a blade that will turn the ignition. That is it. Without programming the transponder chip to your van, the engine will crank and stall every time. Hardware stores do not program transponder chips, and most do not even cut to the right profile for a van lock this age. You still need someone with the right equipment to finish the job. If you already bought the blank, bring it along when you call. Depending on the blank, we may be able to use it, or we may need to swap to one we know is right for this application.
