1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a transponder key and why does it matter for my 1999 Silhouette?

A transponder key has a small chip sealed inside the plastic head. When you turn the key, the vehicle security system reads the chip. If it recognizes it, the engine runs. If it doesn't, the engine starts briefly and then stalls, usually within a second or two. That's the system doing its job. For your Silhouette, this means a key cut at a hardware store won't work as a real spare unless the chip is also programmed.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much for a replacement key on a van this old?

A few reasons. Dealers have overhead built into every ticket, and key replacement goes through the service department, not just a parts counter. On a late-1990s GM van, some dealers simply don't prioritize it, or they have to source the blank and schedule time with a tech who handles the programming side.

Q: The van starts but stalls immediately after I turn the key. Is that a key problem or something else?

On a 1999 Silhouette with a transponder key, that start-then-stall pattern almost always points to the vehicle security system not recognizing the chip. It means the key turns the ignition mechanically, but the system didn't get a valid signal from the transponder, so it cut the engine. Check whether the key you're using is an original or a copy. Hardware store copies are cut to the blade shape but are almost never programmed.

Q: Can I program a replacement transponder key myself at home?

Some late-1990s GM vehicles had an onboard relearn sequence owners could do themselves if they had two working keys. The 1999 Silhouette's procedure depends on whether you still have at least one functional programmed key in hand. With one working key, there may be an ignition-based add-a-key method worth exploring. With zero working keys, there's no DIY path. You need a technician with the right programming equipment to re-establish the key count from scratch.

1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy parked near the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach. He'd been browsing the shops, came back to his 1999 Silhouette, and realized his only key was gone.

Not locked inside, just gone. He'd had it cut at a hardware store months earlier and never thought to ask whether the copy actually worked to start the van. Turns out the copy hadn't been programmed, so it was never a real spare to begin with. He was down to zero functional keys.

I pulled up and started by decoding the lock cylinder. From there I cut a replacement key blade on site, matched to the vehicle. Then I connected to the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure to register the new key to the system. No tow, no waiting on a parts order, no leaving the van somewhere overnight.

The moment the van started and held idle without stalling, he just stood there for a second. That stall after a second is the thing people remember when a bad key has burned them before. This one didn't stall.

He asked about a spare before I packed up. I cut a second key and programmed it right then. Two working keys, confirmed on site, before I left the curb.

Oldsmobile Silhouette Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette key have remote buttons on it?▼

No. The 1999 Silhouette uses a transponder key, which is a metal key with a chip embedded in the plastic head. There are no lock, unlock, or hatch buttons on it. It goes in the ignition cylinder, turns the van on, and the chip communicates with the vehicle security system to authorize the engine.
