Got a call from someone parked near the shops in Downtown El Cajon. His 2004 GTO had been broken into overnight. Window was fine, door popped the old-fashioned way, and the keys were gone off the seat. He still had a spare at home but was shaken up about it, and rightfully so. The spare gets you mobile, but the stolen set is still out there and still programmed.
He asked me if the stolen keys could be used to start the car later. Honest answer: yes, until we wipe them. That was the whole reason he called instead of just ordering a key online.
I drove out, connected through the OBD port, ran the full key reset so every previously programmed key got cleared from the immobilizer, and then registered two new remote head keys in the same session. His spare from home got wiped and re-registered too, which is the part people sometimes forget. If you do not re-register the spare during the reset, it goes dead along with everything else.
He watched the whole thing from his driver seat. When I handed both keys back and he locked and unlocked the doors himself, you could see him relax a little. Not because the keys were shiny and new, but because the stolen ones were genuinely dead.
The dealer was going to have him tow it in and wait a couple of days. We did it in the parking lot in under an hour.
