2006 Pontiac GTO
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know I'm getting the right replacement fob for my 2006 GTO?

The factory FCC ID on the fob is the identifier to match. It's printed on the back of your original key if you still have it. That number tells us the exact transmitter your vehicle's receiver is paired to work with. If someone sells you a fob with a different FCC ID, it won't program correctly to your car no matter what tool they use.

Q: How does your price compare to the dealer for a 2006 Pontiac GTO key?

Way less. The dealer price on these includes their overhead, a service write-up, and a wait that can stretch several days, especially on a vehicle like the GTO that they don't see constantly. I come to you in Coronado, cut the key on site, program it through the OBD port, and test everything before I leave. Call for the exact number, but it won't be anywhere close to what the dealer quoted you.

Q: I still have one working key. Can I program a second GTO key myself at home?

Not on this setup. The 2006 GTO does not have a DIY add-a-key sequence you can run from the driver's seat with ignition turns or button presses the way some older domestic vehicles do. Key enrollment on this system goes through the OBD port with a capable programmer. If you bought a blank fob online thinking you could pair it yourself, you'll still need someone with the right equipment to finish the job.

Q: My 2006 GTO starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Is the key dead?

Start with the CR2032. A dying battery will kill the remote signal long before it affects the transponder, so the car starts but the lock and unlock buttons do nothing. Swap the battery, make sure it's seated flat with good contact, and retest. If that doesn't fix it, the fob's internal transmitter may have failed or taken a hit. At that point the remote side needs to be replaced and reprogrammed.

2006 Pontiac GTO Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Coronado Village, near the quiet residential streets off Orange Avenue, I got a call from a GTO owner who had lost both of his keys. Not misplaced. Gone. He'd moved recently and somewhere between boxes and the new garage, they vanished. The car sat in the driveway looking great and going nowhere.

He told me he called the dealer first. They quoted him a number that made him pause, then told him the car would need to be towed in and he should expect to wait several days. He didn't love that answer.

I pulled up with my equipment, confirmed the OBD port was clear, and got to work. All-keys-lost on this generation requires wiping the existing key memory and enrolling the new key fresh so the car accepts it. I cut the blade to match his ignition, ran the programming sequence through the port, verified the immobilizer recognized the new key, then tested the remote buttons one by one.

He turned the key and it fired right up. Sat there for a second like he was waiting for something to go wrong. Nothing did.

The whole thing was done in under 45 minutes, on his driveway, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted. He asked if I had a card. I gave him two.

Pontiac GTO Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What battery does the 2006 Pontiac GTO remote head key use?▼

It takes a CR2032. Common size, easy to find at any auto parts store or pharmacy. If your remote has been acting up with short range or buttons that need multiple presses, that's usually the battery fading before it dies completely. When I cut and program a replacement key, I always put a fresh CR2032 in before handing it over.
