2005 Pontiac GTO
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a remote head key and how does it work on the 2005 GTO?

A remote head key puts two separate systems into one unit. The metal blade cuts into the ignition cylinder the same as any traditional key. Inside the housing, a transponder chip communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer when you turn the key, and the car won't run without that handshake. Separately, the remote transmitter in the same housing handles the wireless lock and unlock signals to the body control side of the car.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much more for a 2005 Pontiac GTO key replacement?

A few reasons. The GTO had a relatively short production run in the US market, and dealers treat low-volume parts as specialty orders. They'll often require the car on-site, verify ownership through their process, and then bill labor at their shop rate on top of parts markup. If they have to order the key, add days to that. We carry stock for these, come to your location in Del Mar, and get it done the same day.

Q: My 2005 GTO starts and runs fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Is the key dead?

Not necessarily. On the remote head key, the transponder that lets the car start is a passive component and doesn't need battery power. The remote buttons do. So if the car starts normally but lock and unlock are dead, start with a fresh CR2032 and check that the battery is seated correctly against both contacts.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2005 GTO. Can you still make a replacement, or does it need to go to the dealer?

All-keys-lost is something we handle. It does take a bit longer than adding a key when you still have one working, because the immobilizer system needs to be accessed through the OBD port and the previous key memory gets cleared before the new key is enrolled. Old keys, wherever they are, won't start the car after that. Figure 30 to 45 minutes on-site.

2005 Pontiac GTO Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There's a stretch of Del Mar Heights where the streets slope toward the canyon and everybody's got a car worth caring about. That's where I got the call. Guy had a 2005 GTO, the V8 kind, and his only remote head key had gotten to the point where the buttons were completely dead. Car still started, but he'd been manually unlocking for weeks and finally got tired of it.

He'd already bought a replacement fob online. That's fine. He just needed someone to cut the blade and get it talking to the car.

I pulled up, looked at what he had, and it was the right application. Good start. Cut the blade on site, got everything programmed through the OBD port. Lock, unlock, trunk release, all three buttons tested and confirmed before I packed up.

The part that stuck with me was when he mentioned the dealer. He'd called them first. They told him they'd need to order a key to VIN and couldn't give him a turnaround faster than a few business days. He was looking at leaving the car and finding a ride to work. That whole chain of events, gone. We were done in under 45 minutes in his driveway.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and he didn't lose the car for a week.

Pontiac GTO Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2005 Pontiac GTO remote head key have?▼

Three buttons. On this key, you're getting lock, unlock, and trunk release. All three are programmed when we do the replacement, and we test each one before we leave. Worth knowing: the trunk release on this one is a dedicated button, not a long-press function, so if only that button stops responding, it's usually a signal strength or battery issue first, not a failed key.
