When a 2004 Scion XA key is done wrong, the immobilizer catches it. The engine cranks but cuts fuel after two seconds. The key turns the lock but the chip fails the transponder challenge. Or it works for a few days, then the immobilizer runs its deeper verification and rejects it.
A customer at the barbershop in San Marcos had a key from another locksmith that stopped starting his XA after about a week. It would crank fine in the morning but by midweek the immobilizer was intermittently rejecting it. He thought the car had an electrical problem, but it didn't. The key was the problem.
The other locksmith had used the wrong chip generation. Scion's Toyota-based immobilizer distinguishes between 4D, G-chip, and H-chip. A 4D in an H-chip car will sometimes pass initial registration but fail the deeper verification cycle. I used my VVDI2 to read the bad key's chip and confirmed the mismatch, then programmed a new key with the correct chip. His remote, FCC ID BAB237131-056, was a 3-button key.
The replacement has been working for months and cost him $95. Dealer would have charged $200. The difference between a Scion key that works and one that dies after a week is the chip generation inside it.
