A Carlton Hills tenant called me on a weeknight. His 2006 Scion xA was parked inside a gated apartment complex in Santee, and the key had just stopped working. Not lost, just dead. The remote buttons did nothing, and he was worried it would not start.
The tow company he called first told him they could not get a flatbed through the gate without a code, and the property management office had closed hours earlier. He found me after that.
I drove in behind a resident leaving for the night, walked over to the xA with my bag, and checked the basics first. The remote was not responding at all, and the battery had been in there a while. I swapped the CR2032, tested the buttons, and got partial response but the range was still off and the signal felt weak. The remote internals were worn enough that a battery alone was not going to fix it.
So I built a replacement remote head key on site. Cut the blade to his vehicle, programmed the transponder and the remote functions through the OBD port, and tested everything in the visitor lot: start, lock, unlock, all three buttons, blade function at the door. The car never left the complex. No tow, no waiting on a gate code, no Monday morning dealer appointment.
He mentioned a dealer quote he had gotten months earlier for a different key issue. It was a lot more than what he paid me. That part was almost an afterthought by the time I was packing up my bag.
