My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, and it's more common on these flip keys than people expect. The blade pivot is held by a small roll pin, and when that loosens or the plastic housing cracks from regular wear, the blade can separate at the worst possible time, including mid-turn in the ignition cylinder.

We extract the broken piece from the cylinder, then transfer your original transponder chip and the remote electronics into a new replacement shell. As long as the chip comes over undamaged, no reprogramming is needed. The car already knows that chip. We cut a fresh blade, reassemble, and test start and remote functions before we're done.

One thing to avoid: owners have tried epoxy and super glue on a cracked flip housing. It holds for maybe a week, then fails again, sometimes leaving residue in the mechanism that makes the next extraction harder. A proper shell swap is the only fix that actually lasts.

What exactly is a remote flip key and what does mine do?

Your 2016 VW CC key is a flip-style fob: the metal blade folds into the body of the key when not in use and springs out when you press the release button. It does two jobs at once. The blade goes into the ignition and the transponder chip inside communicates with the immobilizer to authorize the start. Separately, the four-button remote handles your lock, unlock, and other functions wirelessly.

Both sides have to work. A key that's cut correctly but not programmed will crank the engine and immediately shut it down. A programmed key with a dead CR2032 will still start the car but the remote buttons won't respond. Knowing which side has the problem saves time and money before anyone starts replacing parts.

Question 3

My Volkswagen is showing a key-not-detected warning. What do I do?

Start with the CR2032. A weak battery is the most common reason the remote side stops responding, and on some VWs a low cell can also cause inconsistent transponder reads.

If the car cranks but immediately stalls and shows an immobilizer warning on the dash, that's a transponder issue, not the remote. The remote locks and unlocks just fine while the transponder is the part that authorizes the start, and they can fail independently.

One thing owners sometimes try: swapping the internals between two fobs to test. That can work, but the transponder chip is fragile. Cracking it during the swap leaves you with a key that still works the remote but won't start the car, and no obvious sign of what went wrong.

If a fresh battery doesn't fix it and the car won't stay running, call us. We can diagnose on site whether it's a programming issue, a damaged chip, or something in the vehicle's security system before you spend money on parts you may not need.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2016 CC does not have an onboard self-program sequence for adding or replacing keys. There's no ignition-turn trick, no button combination. Programming requires connecting to the OBD port with professional diagnostic equipment, reading the vehicle's security data, and registering the new key to the car.

If you've already bought the fob, that's fine. We can program it on site. Just confirm it matches the factory FCC ID on your original key before we start, because not every aftermarket fob is compatible even when it looks identical.

My flip key blade is worn down and slipping in the ignition. Do I need a whole new programmed key or just a new blade?

Usually just a shell and blade swap, not a full reprogram. The transponder chip lives inside the fob body, not the blade itself. If the electronics are intact, we move the chip and remote board into a new housing, cut a fresh blade to your car, and you're done. The immobilizer never knows anything changed.

Where it gets more involved is if the original chip is cracked or corroded during the swap, or if the fob has already been repaired once with adhesive or heat and the internals are compromised. We check that on site before committing to a direction. A worn blade that's been forcing the cylinder for months can also leave the ignition cylinder itself needing attention, which is a separate conversation. But in most cases, a blade that's just worn or a housing that's cracking is a shell replacement job, not a programming job.
