I got a call from a guy in Otay Ranch, Chula Vista. His 2006 Volvo V50 had been to another locksmith a week earlier. The key started the car, no problem. But by day five, the car was rejecting the fob intermittently. Sometimes it would start in the morning and then act up by evening. He was convinced something was wrong with his vehicle's body electronics module, not the key.

When I pulled the fob apart on my kit tray, the first thing I noticed was the battery. Someone had put in a thinner cell that was sitting loose in the contact cradle. But when I ran a diagnostic read on the transponder chip inside the key, the bigger problem showed up: the chip variant did not match what the immobilizer was expecting for that generation of V50. The previous locksmith had used what looked close enough but was not correct. Volvo's immobilizer is not forgiving about that. It passed the first handshake on a cold start and then failed on subsequent cycles once the system ran its full verification sequence. That is why the key worked for a few days and then started acting up.
I programmed a new fob with the correct transponder type, seated a proper CR2450, and ran both the ignition and remote enrollment to completion. Then I tested it through several lock, unlock, and start cycles while he watched.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out for comparison. He laughed and said he already had, after the first locksmith failed him. The number the dealer quoted was enough that he did not even finish the sentence.
The difference between a Volvo key that holds and one that dies in a week is whether whoever programmed it actually matched the chip to the platform. That detail is not optional.
